The TLM 170 R is a universal studio microphone for the highest demands. It combines top technical performance with the euphony of a large-diaphragm capsule. The TLM 170 R works extremely linearly in all five directional characteristics. With the optional N 248 power supply, the directional behavior can be controlled remotely.

A milestone in modern recording technology

The TLM 170 R is perhaps the most universal Neumann microphone. It is characterized by an extremely wide dynamic range and a remarkably linear frequency response, in all five polar patterns, even outside the recording axis. This means that the TLM 170 R captures the natural sound of every sound source, including the room response, without itself appearing in terms of sound. In addition, the directional characteristic can also be adjusted remotely using the optional N 248 power supply unit.

Ahead of its time

The TLM 170 R was developed with high-resolution audio formats in mind. Already in 1983 it achieved an enormous dynamic range of 130 dB, because it was the first microphone with Neumann's fet 100 technology, which guarantees full sound transparency and powerful bass transmission even at the highest levels thanks to a transformer-free output stage. The sound transducer is just as impressive as the microphone electronics. The K 89 double membrane capsule is characterized by high linearity in every respect: flat frequency response, high impulse fidelity and frequency-independent directional characteristics. The diffuse field is also reproduced unadulterated in all directional characteristics, which is extremely important for a natural surround sound.

Truly universal

The TLM 170 R is ideal for orchestral recordings and can be used both as a main microphone and as a support microphone. At the same time, it is also ideal for singing and speech when it comes to depicting the human voice in its natural beauty. With an inherent noise of just 14 dB-A and a limit sound pressure level of up to 154 dB (with switchable pre-attenuation), the TLM 170 R captures even very quiet and very loud sound sources without annoying noise or distortion. Another switch activates a bass cut at 100 Hz. Five directional characteristics are available to choose from using a rotary switch: omnidirectional, wide cardioid, cardioid, hypercardioid and figure eight.
